‘Snakes and Ladders’
Memories of a Malaysian Childhood
Alya Hatta | Annie Nah | Anjang Akuan | Howard Tan | Nadia Nizamudin | Nurin Yusof | Snozze

‘Snakes and Ladders’ is an art exhibition that brings together a roster of Malaysian artists, exploring their take on a nostalgic Malaysian childhood. The show aims to make a break in present time and allow for the reliving of one’s past. Snakes and Ladders will feature at The Incubator, an art exhibition and project space at ZOO, Atria Shopping Gallery, Petaling Jaya.

‘Snakes and Ladders’ is comprised of painters, collage, textile and performance artists. Mirroring the breadth of their techniques, each artist reminisces about their different interpretations of what a Malaysian childhood means.

Despite the similarities within their collage techniques, Nadia Nizamudin and Howard Tan show differences in their depictions of nostalgia. Nizamudin’s up-lifting and emotive pieces are expressive in nature, sharing joy through the display of human behaviour between the intricacies of thread, paint, paper and textile. On the other hand, Penang based artist Howard Tan turns the tables by reeling the viewer back to Malaysian colonial past in his tightly constructed collages featuring Eurocentric elements from fashion styling to old stamps.

In addition to this, the show features Annie Nah and Snozze’s collaboration, the ‘Bananasalak’ series, previously shown at Balai Seni Negara. Together, the street artists bring back fond memories of lazy morning television time by creating stylistically painted renders of classic cartoon characters like Shin Chan, Goku and Patrick Star. The morning memory is completed by Anjang Akuan’s paintings depicting a kitchen with overly crowded fridge magnets and a pantry stocked with all too familiar food items.

The exhibition takes a turn once again with an interactive video installation - a collaborative piece by Alya Hatta and Nurin Yusof. The video features a candid conversation between the two young artists who, on a surface level, appear to attempt to discuss the memories of their respective childhoods. The video, however, plays on emotion through allowing the viewer to navigate different phases of discomfort, personal censorship and humour – creating questions surrounding the nature of child upbringing in a South East Asian context. Hatta and Yusof will be performing at the opening of Snakes and Ladders.

‘Snakes and Ladders’ opens on Monday 12th August 2019 at 7pm at Zoo@Atria, G.31 Ground Floor, Atria Shopping Gallery, Jalan SS22/23, Damansara Jaya, 47400 Petaling Jaya. The exhibition runs from 12 August to 26 August. Zoo is open 7 days a week from 10am - 10pm. For more information, please contact Ophelia at +60377322715 or
